New Salem Recycling Challenge

Mrs. Pope and her class planting flowers in front of the school.

New Salem celebrated Earth Month with a recycling challenge. All 14 classes worked to earn an ice cream party and to be honored with a chance to plant the large flower box in front of the school.

For a period of 8 days, students brought in recyclables. The results were impressive- 762 plastic bottles, 42 aluminum cans, 58 glue sticks, 21 ink cartridges and 9 cell phones for a total of almost 900 items.

Winning the honor of planting the shrubs and flowers, Mrs. Pope’s fourth grade squeaked by Mrs. Austin’s third graders by 1 point. Mrs. Harris’s fifth grade class earned third place.

Way to go, students! Keep up the recycling effort the rest of the year.!
