Let's Color A Cure For Cancer

Parkwood's Relay For Life team members took part in the Luminary Walk at 9 p.m. where all members walk in silence remembering those who have or have had cancer.

Not many people can say they haven’t been affected by cancer in some way, and Parkwood is no exception. That’s why every year on a Friday night in May, Parkwood participates in Relay For Life. On May 6, 2011 about 40 Parkwood students did just that.

They ventured out to Sun Valley High School to help find a cure, raising $1,324 in the process as part of the $130,000 raised by Union County’s team. Attendance secretary, Michelle Broome, said, “With all the people being affected by cancer today, it’s more important than ever to raise money to find a cure.”

Before going to Relay For Life, Parkwood’s Rebelution worked hard to bring in donations.  They sponsored “Color A Cure For Cancer” where they sold crayons for $1 which could be purchased in memory of or in honor of someone who had cancer or to say “I want to help find a cure.” They also sold various Parkwood t-shirts for $5 each and luminaries for $10 each and even sponsored a scavenger hunt with faculty members donating based on categories.

The next Union County Relay For Life event will be the woman-less beauty pageant, Ms. Relay, that will be held at CATA on June 25th at 7 p.m. This event is the culminating fundraiser that consists of male contestants, usually from different Union County schools, dressing up and competing in a "real" beauty pageant. Stay tuned for more information about this fun and family friendly event!
