UCPS students participate in electoral process
Many UCPS students across the county held mock presidential debates and/or elections, an opportunity to get involved in the electoral process on a school level.
Kim Harris, assistant principal at Indian Trail Elementary said students at her school learned first-hand about citizenship, responsibility and democracy when they held a mock election on November 3, the day before their parents voted in their communities.
Students voted for the governor of North Carolina and the president of the United States. “Every student in the school had the chance to do their civic duty,” Harris said. “The mock election included signing in, voting in private booths, a ballot designed specifically for elementary students and polling judges.”
Students dressed in red, white and blue as a patriotic gesture. Indian Trail Elementary Principal Sherry Richardson said she hopes that the activity will help students grow up to be adults who know the importance of voting and its role in keeping the United States “the land of the free.”
Sun Valley Elementary School students also got into the electoral spirit with a mock presidential debate held the week before elections. Two teachers at the school posed as the presidential candidates, United States Senators John McCain and Barack Obama.
Questions came from students who had researched the candidates' positions on education, the economy and the war in Iraq. North Carolina Senator Eddie Goodall served as the debate moderator.
The SVES assembly was the culmination of a month of collaborative research by the students in computer and enrichment classes. Students in the audience sang patriotic songs, while others waved posters for the candidates that had been made in art classes.
Following the debate, the SVES students cast their ballots in a mock election held November 3, 2008. The winner of the election was announced before the students went home at the end of the school day.
