UCPS Pre-K Beautifies the Butterfly Garden at Sardis Elementary
Two Union County Public Schools Pre-K classes at Sardis Elementary and their families participated in an environmental service project to "Beautify the Butterfly Garden" of the school's courtyard from April 4-8. This is part of the UCPS "Green Initiative" which implements environmental service projects that make a positive impact on the school and community. Students have been learning about spring, how plants grow, how butterflies change and the importance of keeping the environment clean and healthy.
Teachers Juliana Porter and Michelle Maher invited parents and families to join in daily gardening activities as the children cleaned and weeded, made bird feeders, and planted flowers and seeds
throughout the garden and indoors. Both classes observed the caterpillar to butterfly metamorphis in Mrs. Porter's classroom and as a culmination to the gardening activities, students observed the
butterflies being released into their natural habitat! The students engaged in hands-on scientific discovery, and will be able to see the fruits of their labor as the beautiful garden continues to grow.
Supplies and services for this project were generously donated from the local community. Gardening supplies were donated from Lowe's of Indian Trail, Sardis Elementary PTO as well as Harris Teeter at The
Shops at Sun Valley, and Food Lion at Union Town Center. Landscaping services were donated by Scott Clark Toyota.
