NC Teaching Fellows Discover Porter Ridge

Student Council member Pavel Kasaev leads a group of Teaching Fellows on a tour of the campus.

Each year, over 500 Teaching Fellows embark on the Discovery Tour travelling around the state of North Carolina to observe schools in action. On Wednesday, May 18th, one bus visited PR to discover how we do things at “the Ridge.”

The NC Teaching Fellows program is a scholarship program providing tuition to future teachers. The Discovery Tour is a special enrichment program that all Fellows participate in after their freshman year in college.

The visiting Fellows group was met by Mr. Basden and given a brief overview of their day. Then the Fellows were divided up into four groups to be given a tour of the campus. The tours were led by four members of the PRHS student council and four members of the faculty or administration. Following the tour, the Fellows had lunch in the media center catered by the PRHS cafeteria.

The final highlight of their visit was a panel discussion led by Mr. Basden focusing on current issues in education. The panelists were Jonathan Bowers, Principal of Piedmont High School, April Dawkins, Media Specialist at Porter Ridge High School and Teaching Fellow graduate, Brooke Stegall, English teacher and Teaching Fellows graduate, and Leah Morgan, PRHS senior and student council member.
