East Elementary Wins the Target "Books for Schools" Award

Principal Karen Anderson and Media Coordinator Lisa Bush happily accept the Books For Schools award from employees from the Target store of Wesley Chapel.

On August 15, 2011, the school week began like any other for Lisa Bush, library media coordinator. It was a usual busy Monday morning helping fifth graders with the morning news broadcast, circulating library materials and updating the school website. Then, around 10:00 a.m., the school principal, Karen Anderson, walked into the Media Center and told Ms. Bush she brought some visitors to meet her.

Ms. Bush looked curiously at the group of ladies wearing red Target T-shirts who were standing with Mrs. Anderson. One of the women stepped forward and said, “Mrs. Bush, my name is DeAmbra Truesdale, and we work at the Target store in Wesley Chapel. Your school has been chosen to receive the Books For Schools award. Target is giving five hundred dollars in books to your school library.” Suddenly, Ms. Bush’s day went from ordinary to extraordinary!

Target has a partnership with First Book, a foundation that provides new books to children in need. To date, First Book has distributed more than 80 million books to programs and schools serving children in the United States and Canada. “Our students are going to be so thrilled about this,” Bush stated. “I already have a wish list started of their requests for the library. I’m going to begin ordering books today, I can’t thank the Target store in Wesley Chapel enough for choosing East Elementary School as the recipient of this award.”
