1ST ANNUAL READ-A-THON

Hello Sun Valley Elementary School Parents!

Welcome to our 1st annual Read-a-thon! We are so excited about this fundraiser! We will not be asking our kids to sell anything and it will also get the kids excited about reading.

The Read-a-thon will work this way. The children will ask parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends and neighbors to sponsor them to read for two weeks and have them sign up on the Pledge Sheet. This can be a flat amount or a by the minute amount. Then they read, or in the case of preschool and kindergarten, are read to by someone at home for two weeks. They keep track of their time on the Reading Log and at the end of the two weeks they will collect the money and turn it into school.

Here is the fun part for the kids, they will participate in raffle drawings on the 14th, 19th and 23rd. Attached to this sheet are their raffle tickets. For every 30 minutes they read they can turn in a raffle ticket. So say the read 3 hours between the 10th thru the 13th, then they can turn in 6 raffle tickets on the 14th to try and win a prize. If they read that much again from the 14th thru the 18th then they turn in new ones on the 19th. Each class will have a winner. At the end of the Read-a-thon the top reader school wide will win an IPOD as will the child who collects the most sponsorship money. There will be a grade level winner as well, who will win a $25 gift card to Target. The class with the most reading minutes will receive an ice cream party and the teacher will receive $25 in scholastic book fair money. All students who are able to achieve the grade level goal will receive an award. All children will receive a participation award.

Parents, you need to know that we are hoping to raise enough money thru this to enable us not to need to have a “traditional” fundraiser this year. Our goal is to receive on average $30 per child. These funds are tax deductible. All funds will be used for the enrichment of our school and our children.

Please help us reach our fundraising goal and get the kids excited about reading!
