Principal Sacrifices for Students' Success

Visiting International Faculty member Tracey Chambers helps shave the head of Principal Dr. Jay Jones. Dr. Jones allowed his head to be shaved as a reward to the students for their fundraising effort in Marvin Elementary's Boosterthon Fun Run, which brought tens of thousands of dollars to the school.

The final counts are not yet in, but Marvin Elementary School students have raised tens of thousands of dollars through pledges to their Boosterthon Fun Run. This is great for the school, but personally impacts the principal as well.

Dr. Jay Jones offered a motivational reward: the classes on each grade level with the most pledges on Monday would have the opportunity to watch their teachers shave his head.

True to his word, Dr. Jones visited 6 classes Thursday, with each visit resulting in an additional stripe clipped out of his hair. The teachers were a bit nervous, the students were shocked, amused, and occasionally horrified, but Dr. Jones consistently expressed his pride in the students' hard work and dedication to their school.

The Boosterthon staff, consistent with their efforts to support the schools with whom they partner, cleaned up the style for Dr. Jones so that he could resume his professional appearance. His courage and commitment to the students, however, will not soon be forgotten by the children.
