FHHS Senior Studies in Egypt
Hannah Potter, a senior here at Forest Hills High, studied abroad in Egypt during this year’s fall semester. She received a scholarship from NSLI-Y (National Security Language Initiative for Youth), a program designed to promote the understanding of lesser known languages and cultures, to travel to Egypt and live with a host family to learn Arabic and explore Egypt.
Hannah arrived in Egypt during the month of Ramadan, an Islamic holiday characterized by fasting during daylight hours, restraining from indulgences, reading the Quaran, and festivities at night. While attending school in Egypt and taking Arabic lessons, Hannah has still been completing work for her classes here at Forest Hills. Hannah’s school has a view of the ancient pyramids of Giza. Last month she visited the pyramids and the other ancient monuments surrounding them. She even got a chance to ride a camel at the pyramids. She also got to attend the Egypt vs. Algeria FIFA World Cup soccer match. She has been experiencing more in these past months than many people will in an entire lifetime, In a blog entry from November Hannah says, “I don't even know where to start in describing how amazing this experience has been. I feel I have grown so much as a person. Each day is like an adventure waiting to be discovered.†Hannah is an inspiration to me as well as many other people and returned home in mid-February.
