Running Rebels Rise in Union County Standings

The Parkwood XC team runs as a family, literally. Here, freshman Joshua Beekman, junior Nathan Beekman, and senior Isaiah Beekman celebrate finishing the boys’ race.

Overcast skies did not keep the Union County XC teams from convening on Wingate University's cross-country course on Thursday, September 22 for their yearly competition. Guys toed the line at 4:30, with girls following thirty minutes later. The combination of weather and the depth of the competition field made for a very interesting race. In addition, the course keepers had added a couple of small challenges which made it even more interesting, including a short yet steep hill in the last mile.

The teams placed well against other schools. With small numbers last year eliminating the opportunity to place as teams, this year the boys’ team was able to place ninth out of eleven, and the girls’ team was able to place seventh out of eleven. Despite the challenges of the meet, four of Parkwood’s running Rebels came away with personal bests: senior Isaiah Beekman, freshman Sawyer Murphy, freshman Natalie Jauch, and sophomore Katia Keller. Several other Rebel runners chased their personal records by seconds. Look for senior John Leckrone, junior John Rorie, junior Sidney Scott, and senior Ruthie Johnson to set new standards at the meet this weekend at McAlpine Park in Charlotte.

By far the largest meet Parkwood attends during the season, with competition coming in from multiple states, and starting lines of 500 or more runners, the Wendy's Invitational at McAlpine is guaranteed to push all of Parkwood’s runners. One third of last year's team set personal records at this meet. Keep in mind that this will also be the scene of the NCHSAA 3A Midwest Regional match up at the end of October. The Parkwood team is large enough this year that they will be running in four different race categories; the top seven girls will take off at 11:00, the top seven boys at 11:30, and a second wave of girls at 12:30. Come out and cheer on the Rebels from among the excitement, and don't forget to join in the celebrating at Wesley Chapel TCBY afterwards! Saturday patrons who mention that they are with the Parkwood team will have part of their proceeds donated to the team.
