Fire Safety Week

Firefighter Kevin explains why this piece of equipment is called a bumper line.

First graders at Porter Ridge Elementary have been learning about fire safety. They learned to develop an escape plan with their families and call 911 in an emergency. They also learned that firefighters are important leaders in their community. Matthew Tomberlin, with the Unionville Volunteer Fire Dept, and Kevin Philemon, with the Unionville V.F.D. and the Monroe Fire Dept. visited the school to teach students more about their equipment and their jobs. Firefighter Kevin showed students the tools on a fire truck and Firefighter Matthew explained the pieces of his turn-out gear. Students learned a lot and developed a great admiration for all of our local firefighters!
