Students Experience Life in Botswana, Africa

Women in Botswana, Africa weave these beautiful baskets from palm branches.

The special area team and media coordinator at Stallings put together a presentation that the Kindergarten and First Grade students rotated through to get a better understanding of the music, dance, arts and crafts and life in Botswana.

Mrs. LeFlore, Media Coordinator at Stallings Elementary , has been communicating with Allison White for almost 4 years via mail, e-mail and SKYPE. Allison is a Peace Corps Volunteer that was stationed in Etsha 6, Botswana, Africa. The 4th and 5th grade students have been writing to her, also. When Allison came home to Asheville, North Carolina for a visit recently she took time out to come to Stallings and talked with 5th graders and brought many artifacts and pictures to share. The students were fascinated with the work that Allison gets to do and the experiences she has had while working in Africa as a Peace Corps Volunteer.

On Friday, October 21, 2011, the “special area” teachers at Stallings presented a globalization project to the kindergarten and first grade classes with rotations through music and movement, arts and crafts and a visual trip to Africa, experiencing first hand accounts from Allison’s letters and artifacts that she left for the boys and girls. The students came away with lots of interesting facts about a country far far away.
