Black History Month celebrated

Marvin Elementary School celebrated Black History Month with a recent visit from Chris Thompson and The Cultural Ensemble, which shared the African culture with students in grades three through five. The Cultural Ensemble is a multi-talented troop that specializes in performing and teaching traditional African and American styles of dance. The Ensemble is comprised of dancers and drummers who deliver a high-energy presentation. During each performance, Thompson plays African rhythms on the Djembe and Congo drums. Marvin Elementary also had African art from the Mint Museum on display in the media center, with opportunities for students in grades K-5 to make their own African masks. Discovery Place also became part of the lesson, teaching kindergarten and first-grade students about Africa. Marvin was also one of 10 UCPS schools in the county to participate in a live podcast with the stars of "Stomp" who were performing at Blumenthal in Charlotte.
