Local Sculptor Enters a Partnership with BHESA
Tom Risser, a sculptor from Waxhaw, has entered into a partnership with BHESA. The goal of the partnership is to inspire students to create artwork that is meaningful & that will inspire other students in the future. Mr. Risser is passionate about working with students and is excited about integrating arts by taking actual student artwork and recreating it into a three-dimensional form. BHESA's fourth graders recently took a field trip to Mr. Risser's studio, where they got a better understanding of the artwork he creates by viewing his over two hundred three-dimensional pieces.
Two fourth grade classes will focus on inspirations from children's literature. Students are reading and getting ideas from books such as The Giving Tree, Oh, The Places You'll Go, and Curious George. Each student will create a pencil drawing. Mr. Risser will select some of the drawings to enlarge into metal sculptures that will be placed ingardens outside the Media Center.
Another class will be studying movement through weather. While thinking about lines associated with weather (lightening, wind, etc.), students will create shapes using emotions associated with weather. In turn, Mr. Risser will take these shapes and create a three-dimensional abstract sculpture with the theme of movement.
