UCPS teacher recognized nationally
Susan Helms, an art teacher at Piedmont High School, has been chosen as the 2009 Special Needs Art Educator of the Year by the National Art Education Association (NAEA).
She was recognized during the NAEA Special Needs Issues Group Awards Ceremony held during the NAEA Convention in Minneapolis on April 18, 2009.
The award recognizes Helms as “a great example to our whole Art Education community and the National Art Education Association (NAEA) Special Needs Group is very proud to honor her with this award,” the news release said.
“Working with special needs children has been one of the highlights of my teaching career,” Helms said. “I spoke with the parent of a former student this week and we were talking about the award. He commented on how much I seemed to enjoy working with young people. He told me that he recently saw a bumper sticker that read: ‘If you love what you do---You will never have to work.’ I am passionate about art and the students that I teach.”
Helms said her colleague, fellow art teacher at Piedmont High School, Tracy Price has been an inspiration in her journey as an educator and advocate for special needs children.
Helms was also recognized by Superintendent Dr. Ed Davis and Board of Education Chairman Dean Arp during the May 5, 20009 Board of Education meeting held at Unionville Elementary School.
