NC Quitline Offering Free Nicotine-Replacement Therapy for State Health Plan Members
North Carolinians covered by the State Health Plan for Teachers and State Employees can receive up to eight weeks of free nicotine-replacement therapy patches by calling QuitlineNC at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669).
The patches are being provided through a partnership that also involves the N.C. Division of Public Health and the N.C. Health and Wellness Trust Fund Commission. "This combination of telephone coaching and medication can more than triple a tobacco user's chance of quitting successfully, compared to trying to quit on his or her own," said Dr. Jeffrey Engel, the state health director.
The plan provides health-care coverage for more than 661,000 state employees, teachers, state university and community college personnel, retirees and their dependents.
As of July 2010, all state health plan members will be placed in a 70/30 Basic Plan. Members may elect to enroll and quality for the 80/20 Standard Plan if they or their dependents do NOT use tobacco or are actively trying to quit tobacco. More information will be distributed soon as annual open enrollment begins. Call the NC Quitline for more information, or visit the state health plan website at: www.shpnc.org to view annual enrollment materials.
