New Principal 101 paves way for new school year

Brenda Kasell, principal at Weddington Elementary, standing, and, from left, Casey Ball, principal at Hemby Bridge Elementary and Cheryl Lawrence, principal at Waxhaw Elementary, discuss some back-to-school planning ideas during a break at the four-day New Principal 101 Training held recently at the Professional Development Center in Monroe.

Four day-long training sessions will hopefully help make the start of the 2009-2010 school year run a little smoother for about 16 new Union County Public School principals.

The sessions, held July 29, July 30, Aug. 3, and Aug. 4, 2009, were designed to educate new principals on the functions of Central Services and how the various divisions can assist them in their roles as principals. The sessions were for the 16 principals assigned to UCPS schools since July 1, 2007.

“We can also share with them our experience, both as principals and supervisors in our areas,” said Associate Superintendent of Building Operations Mike Webb. “We can say, ‘Here are some of the things you may face, pitfalls or barriers, and here’s how you may want to approach those.’ I think that’s the key to it.”

Every division in Central Services, including Human Resources, Instruction, Policy, Finance, Auxiliary Services, Building Operations and Communications was thoroughly discussed; pointing out how each division could assist the principal in his or her role. Michele Morris, the school system’s general council, also offered a session on legal issues that the principals could encounter.

“These sessions put us all on the same page,” said Brenda Kasell, who began her role as principal at Weddington Elementary on July 1, 2009. “There are changes within the various departments of Central Services and we’re getting an idea of how those changes are affecting the whole system. Each presenter has his own area of expertise and they are all sharing their expertise with us. That’s what we need right now.”

This is the first year Central Services has held this type of comprehensive new principal training. In the past, it was done on an individual basis.

Those new principals attending were Casey Ball, Hemby Bridge Elementary; Theresa Benson, Walter Bickett Elementary School; Jonathan Bowers, Piedmont High School; Mary Jo Breckenridge, Wolfe School; Janice Burns, Sun Valley High School; Kim Chinnis, Parkwood Middle School; Cindy Croffut, Union Elementary; Priscilla Davis, New Town Elementary; Laurel Healy, Cuthbertson Middle School; Jay Jones, Marvin Elementary; Brenda Kasell, Weddington Elementary; Cheryl Lawrence, Waxhaw Elementary; Rod Miller, Central Academy of Technology and Arts; Patrice Parker, Sun Valley Elementary; Barry Ross, South Providence School; and Steve Wray, Weddington Middle.
