US Representative Sue Myrick got a first-hand look at the opening the 2009-2010 school year when she visited Central Academy of Technology and Arts Tuesday, (Aug. 25, 2009).
Myrick met with school officials, including UCPS Superintendent Dr. Ed Davis and Board of Education Chairman Dean Arp, as well as Central Academy principal Rodney Miller and members of the school’s staff during a school tour.
Davis explained the concept of Central Academy to Rep. Myrick. “On the one hand, it’s the school of the arts and the school of technology,” he said. “But it’s also a comprehensive high school that has all the activities such as sports, clubs and student government. It’s a school that has already made its mark. It has strong leadership, innovative teachers and we’re excited about it.”
Rep. Myrick, who was in the county on a speaking engagement, said she wanted to tour Central Academy because of its connection with technology and science. “I’m a great believer in technology and science and preparing young people for the future,” she said. “I had heard lots of good things about the school and I see they were right. I was delighted to have the opportunity to talk with everyone and see what goes on here. This is the future of education.”
Myrick said visiting public schools helps her to understand the needs of educators and school systems as a whole. “The majority of what you need is for the federal government to stay out of your way, because you’ve got the answers here and are doing it right,” she said.
