Unionville, CATA win at regionals

Three Unionville Elementary teams and one team from Central Academy of Technology and Arts move onto state competition after winning at the regional Odyssey of the Mind competition at Wingate University on March 8, 2008.

Teams placing first or second in this regional competition will go on to State Competition at East Carolina University on April 5, 2008. Winners in the state will then go on to compete in the World Finals in Maryland.

CATA sent a team to compete, coached by Laura Minsk and Deb Christensen. The CATA team won second place for its solution to the Dinostories problem.

Unionville sent four teams to compete at the Central Regional Tournament, with three teams taking home wins. Coaches and consultants were Sharon Williams, Eric Hinson, Susan Long, Cristina Michelli, Megan Torres, Courtney Luce, Pam Laney, Laura Bird, Lindsey Gallagher and Charlotte Heasty.

“I am extremely proud that we had three out of four teams place for the state finals,” said Unionville Elementary principal Sharyn VonCannon. “Unionville Elementary School did an excellent job representing Union County Public Schools. Many, many hours of hard work goes into this each year, and I appreciate everyone who helps make this possible for our students.”

Unionville’s teams competed with 18 teams from the Charlotte Metro Region in their respective divisions. Two teams, DinoStories and Wonderful Muses, took first place in their division, while the Unionville team the Eccentrics placed second.

Teams that place first or second at the state level in April will advance to World Finals at the University of Maryland, competing with teams representing more than 40 US states and 30 countries around the world.
