Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grants
The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grants started as a small pilot program in 2002 in four states and now serves all 50 states. The Union County Public Schools is proud to announce that, for the past three years, its Child Nutrition Program has been awarded one of the sought after Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grants. This grant provides fresh fruits and vegetables to students free of charge outside the National School Lunch Program / School Breakfast Program. The grant is awarded to schools that serve a high percentage of free and reduced cost meals. It is also based on nutrition education standards and the overall health plan for each individual school. Walter Bickett Elementary, East Elementary, and Rock Rest Elementary have all previously received funding or are currently using funding provided by the grant. The grant allows for an additional $35,000 per year to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables for students.
