WBES wins Trailblazer award
Walter Bickett Elementary School is the Western Region and statewide winner of the School Trailblazer Award for its “Support Our Students After-School Program and Parent Academy.”
Pamela Bailey, the program’s director; Janet Miller, the school’s Parent Academy Coordinator and an exceptional education teacher; and Walter Bickett Elementary School Principal John Jones accepted the School Trailblazer Award from the North Carolina Association of School Administrators on March 14, 2008, in Greensboro.
In partnership with the Union County Arts Council and a grant from the NC Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, SOS serves 120 students for two-and-a-half hours Monday through Thursday.
The after-school program offers active play, homework support, academic tutoring, performing arts and socialization activities. It offers, free of charge, drama/theater art, dance, ballet, golf, computers/technology, baton, etiquette, color guard, sign language, Mandarin Chinese and cheerleading.
SOS also provides a Parent Academy where parents are provided four or five free classes each year, in both Spanish and English, on how to support their students in reading and writing, parenting skills and how to meet the needs of special education students.
