Benton Heights' Students Take Center Stage at Knights Theater
Benton Heights Elementary School of the Arts took center stage at the Knight Theater in Charlotte, NC. On October 20th, the theater celebrated an event that was part of their Corporate Campaign that started in September and runs through December. The event includes CEO’s and executives from many surrounding businesses and industries in the greater Charlotte Area.
Twelve of Benton Height’s students were treated as VIP guests with a meal and a movie in the dining area before performing on stage. They were accompanied by Mr. James Wagner, Music Specialist. Mr. Frank Casstevens, Arts Coordinator, spoke on "Taking Time to Live" as a theme based on the idea that each of the business leaders have had their time being a student and being enriched through the arts, now is the time to provide for the students in our classrooms today. The speech focused on students developing their creativity and imagination
by being a part of a strong arts curriculum. The presentation included a power point showing the many areas that our school has been engaged through the arts and especially through the partnership in education with Blumenthal. It put great emphases on the fact that Benton Heights Elementary is a Title one school with great diversity.
Blumenthal has been a partner to Benton Heights School of the Arts since 2007 providing over 140 professional artist’s lessons to our 700 plus students in Pre-k through 5th grade. They have provided transportation and tickets to many of our students to performances in Charlotte that otherwise would have not been able to attend. Last year these included Garth Fagan's Dance Company, Momix Botanica and a performance on stage with Music Theatre International from New York. Benton Heights is only one of three schools in Union and Gaston Counties that partners with Blumenthal.
Benton Heights has enjoyed this partnership known as R.O.Y.A.L , "Reaching our young Artistic Learners" and has begun lessons in every grade level this current year. This partnership is in addition to our arts based campus which includes Dance, Drama, Strings and Broadway. Benton Heights is a school of choice for any student in Union County and also is an A+ School, one of only 41 schools in North Carolina.
