Briggs Named Teacher of the Year
Mrs. Jessica Briggs, Porter Ridge’s drama teacher, is having a really great day! On Tuesday, November 1st, her students previewed two plays that they will be performing at the North Carolina Theatre Conference later this week. It was her birthday. And to her surprise, Mr. Basden interrupted the introduction to the performance to announce that she has been named the Porter Ridge Teacher of the Year for the 2012-2013 school year.
Mrs. Briggs has been teaching theatre at Porter Ridge for six years. She previously worked at Porter Ridge Middle School. Her husband, Matthew Briggs, is also a teacher in UCPS, current teaching at Piedmont Middle School. Mrs. Briggs received her Bachelor of Science in Theatre Arts Education from Appalachian State University.
Under her leadership, the theatre program at Porter Ridge has earned numerous accolades including awards received at the North Carolina Theatre Conference in two of the last three years. One of her students, Alexis Graham, described Mrs. Briggs: “She is amazing. She makes theatre class so much fun. Mrs. Briggs is one of the best teachers I have ever had.â€
In response to receiving this award, Mrs. Briggs said, “I am truly honored to be Porter Ridge High School’s Teacher of the Year. I feel lucky to work at such a great school with wonderful faculty, staff, administration. Thank you.â€
