Pennies for the Planet

What a tremendous success! New Salem students collected $799.43 in pennies and small change to support the Green Team’s “Pennies for the Planet” drive. Students were asked to collect money to help restore the Sabal Palm forest on the Rio Grande River, to help preserve the barrier islands of North Carolina for the loggerhead turtle, and to help protect the Arctic Ocean for the polar bear and other arctic animals.
Challenged to collect one dollar per child, students met the goal of $300.00 during the first week of the drive. The money kept pouring in and by the end of October, students had more than doubled the goal. Mrs. Baucom’s class collected the most money, with Miss Knyrim’s class and Mrs. Schweiber’s class close behind. New Salem will celebrate our success in this global project. Thanks to everyone who contributed!
