Colonial Camp

Making "Hoe Cakes" on an open fire!

On Friday, November 18, the Colonial Camp conducted an authentic, hands-on, Colonial-American Field Trip at Fairview Elementary School with 5th grade.
Students received an introduction to different elements of Colonial American life. They participated in the following activities:

  • Candle-Making with beeswax
  • Cooked "Hoe Cakes" a quick bread that was garnished with honey, butter, and preserves
  • Played Native American games
  • Made Paper out of natural materials

The program was designed to help students experience 18th century life using authentic materials and methods.

Luke T. enjoyed making the natural paper out cotton.  When I asked him about it he replied, "It was interesting to see how you could make paper out of natural materials like cotton and vegetables!"
