Waxhaw Feeds the Need

Chris Franklin, Abby Leighton, Dylan Holland, and Caroline Junkins stand proudly with some of the collected items.

During the month of November Waxhaw Elementary participated in its annual canned food drive for needy families in Waxhaw.

Nine-year old Michael Torbush went around his neighborhood asking for donations during the week of November 14th. Altogether he collected 79 cans. â€œI was proud to help,” recalls the third grader. And there is still more!
“Our goal is to collect at least 2,500 can/dry goods,” says third grade Dylan Holland. â€œI’ve already provided a few.”
“All the needy should have full stomachs for Thanksgiving, not just us,” shared Caroline Junkins, age eight. â€œEveryone deserves to celebrate,” adds Christopher Franklin, a caring third grader.
“I’ve never known a day that I haven’t complained. But I am a very compassionate girl, and I saw that I could make a difference; I did,” says 9 year old third grader Abigail Leighton.
So Waxhaw spirited into action, collecting cans of creamed corn, green beans and other canned/dry goods to give to the Waxhaw families in need. â€œAll those cans piled up makes me feel so good inside,” says Chris.
Waxhaw Elementary is proud to know how these people and many more in the Waxhaw community are helping.
As of November 22, 2011 we far exceeded our goal of 2,500 cans. The current total is  3,150 items, and we are still counting! As a reward for our participation in collecting can and for reaching our school goal, Cheryl Lawrence (principal), Justin  Ashley (vice-principal),Jessica Santana (Pre-K Teacher), Amanda Hatch, and Kristen Kutsy (Teacher Assistants) wore crazy wigs and silly socks to school.
