Junior ROTC Wins 1st Place at Airshow Drill Competition

The Piedmont High School Air Force Junior ROTC won 1st place overall at the 2011 Monroe Airshow Drill Competition on Saturday, November 5.  Also winning first place in their categories were Cadet Cody Trull, who took 1st place commanding the Element Regulation Armed Drill Team and Cadet Teodor Tutelya, who took 1st place commanding the Flight Regulation Armed Drill Team.  Cadet Major Amber Clyburn was the recipient for Piedmont High School.  

Another prestigious award, the Union County Patriot Award, was presented by the Union County Commissioners at the opening of the Warrior and Warbirds Airshow on November 5. One recipient from each Union County High School receives this award, and Cadet Major Amber Clyburn was the recipient for Piedmont High School. Cadet Clyburn is the Vice Commander of the Piedmont Junior ROTC unit and was also Commander of the Unarmed Element Exhibition Squad, which performed at the Airshow. According to Clyburn, “This award was really a surprise to me. I really enjoyed receiving it and seeing the smiling faces from members of my unit.” In addition, performing an exhibition at the airshow was Cadet Bradley Hinson commanding the Armed Flight Exhibition Drill Team, Cadet Jeff Gordon commanding the Unarmed Flight Regulation Drill Team, Cadet Dina Gerasimchuk commanding the Unarmed Flight Exhibition Drill Team, Cadet Timothy Shelton commanding the Color Guard, and Cadet Megan Brooks commanding the Unarmed Element Regulation Drill Team.

The Piedmont High School Air Force Junior ROTC Color Guard then presented the Colors for the Grand Opening of the 2011 Monroe Warrior and Warbirds Airshow. Following the National Anthem, they posted each military service flag in a solemn ceremony, accompanied by their respective service songs, honoring the veterans of each military service branch. The airshow’s aerial performances that followed were an exciting conclusion to their outing.
