Wingate fifth graders share heritage through culture boxes

Pictured, from left, are Wingate Elementary fifth graders Emily Toboada, Brenda Hernandez, Victoria Tarlton and Avigail Salazar-Arias sharing items that represent clothing, tradition, and celebrations in their family culture.

Wingate Elementary fifth-grade teacher Lynn Schwallie organized a unique project for students to introduce themselves to their classmates, as well as learn about their unique cultures.

The project included sharing their culture with treasured items, photographs, and family objects that represented each child’s family culture such as traditions, celebrations, art, music, literature or clothing.

As the year has progressed, students have been sharing their cultural boxes with their classmates to extend and support their cultural studies throughout the curriculum.
