Being Good For Goodness' Sake

Third grade pals James Lowery and Tarry Marsh demonstrate good citizenship.

During December, one may hear the popular Christmas song “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town.” In this song, boys and girls are told to “be good for goodness’ sake".Two students in Ms. Ashley Hinson’s third grade class did just that when they decided to use their play time at recess to pick up trash on the playground at East Elementary School. Tarry Marsh and James Lowery approached their teacher Ms. Hinson with their arms full of milk cartons, chip bags, paper and other debris they had collected. A surprised and pleased Hinson said, “When I asked what they were doing, they said they were helping the community. This wasn’t something we had discussed in the classroom. I thought it was the sweetest thing for them to do on their own.”

When asked what motivated them to start picking up the trash, James Lowery said, “It was my friend Tarry’s idea. He saw the trash and said we should pick it up and I thought it was a great idea, so I went along with it. We hoped Ms. Hinson would be proud of us.” His buddy, Tarry Marsh, added with a smile, “It feels good to help. We would have picked up even more if we’d had bigger bags to put it in!” Marsh and Lowery both said they plan to pick up more trash when they see it on the school grounds. They hope to inspire other students to take responsibility and be good citizens. What better way to express the true spirit of the holiday season than with random acts of kindness such as this?
