Turkey, dressing, pumpkin pie and ... dictionaries?
Turkey, dressing, pumpkin pie and…. dictionaries? That’s right… dictionaries! In November, all Western Union Elementary school third graders received a brand new Webster’s English Dictionary courtesy of the Waxhaw-Weddington Sunrise Rotary Club.
Nancy Duncan, president of the local Rotary chapter, handed out over 70 dictionaries to the gracious third graders before the Thanksgiving break. Students were then challenged to find words such as service, community, and gift for prizes.
Western Union Third Grade Teacher Julia Tsitouris had this to say about the event: "As teachers, one of the greatest gifts we can give our students is a love for language. We need to immerse them in language at every opportunity. Our goal is for our students to realize and appreciate the magic in words. Our hope, as the poet Julius Lester says, is that the words of literature will 'link our souls like pearls on a string, bringing us together in a shared and luminous humanity.' The gift of a dictionary for each third grade student is more than a dictionary; it is an invitation into beautiful language. The Rotary Club's generous gift is a treasure that will last our students a lifetime. This simple gift has the power to change the world one student at a time. The third grade team would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Rotary Club for investing in our students!"
Over the past four years, the Waxhaw-Weddington Sunrise Rotary Club has distributed dictioneries to over 850 third graders at seven different schools.
