Fill Your Stocking With Literacy
Poplin Elementary held its first ever Fill Your Stocking With Literacy event on Thursday, December 8, 2011. Over 200 Poplin families attended the celebration. One of the event organizers, Cheryl Tresher who is a Kindergarten Teacher, said "I wanted to host an event like this in order to provide families with activities and ideas on how to support their child's literacy needs at home."
During the event, teachers from Kindergarten to Fifth Grade hosted information sessions for families. Also Jeni Lowe, who is the Family Services Coordinator for the Union County Public Library, shared information about upcoming literacy programs at the Union County Public Library.
One of the activities in the Kindergarten classrooms was a make-and-take activity where parents assisted their child in making a holiday craft with marshmallows. "Activities like this where families can spend time together reading and following the steps of a recipe or craft are easy and fun ways parents can help their child develop reading skills," said Tresher. Parents of fifth-grade students participated in a hands-on activity using computers to explore online literacy resources which can be used at home. Each family left with a stocking full of literacy resources and donations from local businesses.
