Buck Jones named Donnie Shell High School Defensive Player-of-the-Year
The Donnie Shell High School Defensive Player of the Year Award is named for the former Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro strong safety. Honoring accomplishment both on and off the football field, this year's award is presented to Buck Jones of Weddington High School. Buck was a fierce competitor on the defensive side of the ball for Weddington. He was asked by his coaches to play both defensive end and middle linebacker, and he tackled these challenges with a positive attitude that was infectious to his teammates. In 2011, Buck had 101 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 19 quarterback pressures and six sacks. He consistently harassed the opposing team's quarterback and running back behind the line of scrimmage and garnered four sacks and one fumble recovery. His hard work and dedication was awarded by being named the 2011 Southern Carolina Conference Player of the Year. His leadership on the football team was evident to his coaches and teammates, and he was named a varsity captain of the team in 2011. When Weddington High School's head coach left to take another job a few weeks before this season began, it was Buck who organized team workouts and held the team together in the face of turmoil. Buck clearly recognized the importance of academics as well as athletics. He was named a NCHSAA Scholar Athlete all four years of school. As much time as he put in on the football field to get better, he put in an equal amount of time in the classroom. He also realized how important it was to be a part of your community, and to give back to those less fortunate. Throughout high school, Buck has volunteered with many organizations. On behalf of Harris Teeter, the Charlotte Touchdown Club is proud to present this year's Defensive Player of the Year Award to Buck Jones.
