First Grade Helps Union County Community Shelter

On November 23, Waxhaw Elementary teacher Victoria Tolbert and principal Cheryl Lawrence delivered two boxes of toiletries to the Union County Community Shelter in Monroe. The donations were in response to a plea from area shelters as their numbers begin to increase in the fall and winter months and the demand grows for supplies.

Collected items included toothbrushes, tubes of toothpaste, razors, shampoo and other toiletries that the residents of the shelter depend on for their personal hygiene. First grade students and teachers at Waxhaw Elementary collected the items during the month of October.

The shelter was founded in 1984 and provides emergency and transitional shelter for adults and families, according to their Facebook page. Their soup kitchen offers three hot meals a day to those who are hungry in the community. They also offer programs to help the homeless get back on their feet and become self-sufficient once again.
