Weddington High School Key Club Demonstrates the Spirit of Giving
Students from Weddington High School Key Club once again volunteered their time and talents at East Elementary on Thursday, December 15th 2011. The high school students spent the day doing service work throughout the school, assisting in the classrooms, gym, media center and helping with a Candy-Gram fundraiser. Along with them, they brought books, other school supplies and money for uniforms for East Elementary students. The club visited East twice last year, once in December and again in May to help with Field Day. The Key Club is sponsored by Jack Kasell, teacher of British Literature at Weddington High School.
The day of service is dedicated to the memory of Dominique Griffin, a UCPS high school student who lost her life to a massive seizure in December of 2006. The Key Club wanted to do more than give food or toys to a charity. They wanted to spend time their time helping children face to face. Fortunately, East Elementary has been the benefactor and the young students look forward to showing the “big kids†around. Emily Foster, social worker for the Monroe cluster said, “I know the Key Club enjoyed being here. When the announcement came to go to the buses, half of the Weddington students were still in the building. They didn’t want to leave.†On the way back to Weddington, the high schoolers stopped to place flowers on Dominique Griffin’s gravesite. They are already looking forward to May, when they can visit East again and help with Field Day.
