Alex Griffin Commits to Catawba
Senior Alex Griffin recently committed to swim and run cross country at Division II Catawba College. Griffin was named all-RRC as a junior in cross country and helped Piedmont qualify for the 2A state championship meet this past season. In addition, Griffin has already qualified for the 2A West Regional swim meet in nine events.
The majority of high school athletes never have the opportunity to play one sport in college, much less two. For Griffin, the decision to attend Catawba was based on several factors. "I love the small atmosphere of Catawba. It feels more personal." In addition to the athletic scholarship money, Griffin will also receive academic money.
In the state cross country meet in 2011, Griffin placed 51st overall out of 130 runners and was Piedmont's top finisher. In addition, Griffin will compete in the 50-yard freestyle, 100 free, 200 free, 500 free, 100 breaststroke, 200 medley relay, 200 free relay, 400 free and 200 individual relay at the 2A West Regional meet. Griffin will compete in the Rocky River Conference championship on January 27.
Juggling two sports will be a challenge at Catawba, however, Griffin noted, "Time management is going to be important. I know there will be a lot of 5 a.m. workouts for swimming and that will be rough."
Congratulations, Alex, on a great cross country and swimming career as a Piedmont Panther and good luck as you compete at the next level.
