Scotch in a can
Scotch whiskey will soon be sold in a 12-ounce aluminum can in the U.S. The can looks very much like a can of soda, and will be priced for less than $5.Each 12-ounce can - which is equal to about eight shots - contains 80-proof "single grain scotch whiskey," according to manufacturer Scottish Spirits Imports, Inc.
Unlike bottled spirits, cans cannot be closed after they have been opened. That will force drinkers to either finish all eight shots of the scotch whiskey in a single occasion, or let some of it go to waste.
Opponents of this "novelty" drink are concerned the beverage will be very appealing to youth. The color and graphics of the packaging, at a glance, is very similar to a can of soda or other nonalcoholic drinks. In addition, consuming the entire 12-ounce can would be defined as binge drinking, which is having five or more drinks in a single occasion for men, four or more drinks for women or teenage males, or three or more drinks for a teenage female. In fact, consumption of eight shots of alcohol in a short time period can put many youth at risk for alcohol poisoning.
