Feature Articles & Deb Bledsoe
Deb Coats Bledsoe, Communications Coordinator for Union County Public Schools, visited Sun Valley Elementary School (SVES) January 24, 2012. She spoke with all students in the fifth grade about her experience writing feature articles. Surrounded by copies of her published articles, she held the rapt attention of 125 students as she described how personal experiences enhanced her writing. Once while researching conditions in a local jail, she underwent the process of being arrested and locked up. The experience made the subject take on a new and more personal meaning as she wrote the article. Resulting from this experience was a well-crafted and successful article.
Fifth grade students are focusing their daily writing on feature stories. They are learning to couple the “5 W’s and How†(who, what, when, where and why) with writing from a point of view that is important to them. SVES students were motivated to write as a result of Mrs. Bledsoe's visit.
