Mrs. Goode's 5th Grade Class Conducts an Ecologocial Investigation

Students conducted a scientific inquiry-based experiment, which demonstrated how our school’s compost bin is an actual ecosystem.

Students were asked to bring in items from a list, that were compostable. We tilled and raked the compost with various gardening tools and made observations and hypotheses, using various scientific tools. Students then recorded the information in their science notebooks.

The goal was to identify various organisms, such as producers; consumers; and decomposers within the compost, and how they interact with one another. Additionally, students made connections to facts from our current social studies unit on Early Colonization to determine how these decomposers provided increased nutrients to the soil, as did the fish and food items that the Native Americans tilled in the soil.

We will continue to monitor the ecological compost and determine its role in our environment.
