Wrestlers are State Champions!

Congratulations to the Piedmont wrestlers on becoming State champions in the North Carolina 2A dual team wrestling tournament on Saturday.  Piedmont defeated Croatan in the finals by a score of 41-22 to earn the honor and to end their season with a perfect 38-0 record!

The Piedmont gym was the setting for the State finals and the home crowd got what they had been wanting for the past three years.  Croatan and Piedmont have batted for the past two State Championships, but Croatan has won both.  The scene, however, was much different this year.  According to Coach Todd Stokes, "We gave up pins last year and didn't give any up this year.  That was the difference in the outcome!"

The finals opened with a forfeit by Croatan in the 182 weight class to Parker Von Egidy.  Then, Bryce Braswell (220 lbs) got a big victory that was followed by a pin from Kyle Eiss at 285.  Six other Panthers picked up victories on Saturday, including Daylan Conner (120), Michael McLamb (132), Steven Bunch (138), Lucas Smith (145), Matt Maske (160), and Dylan Nelson (170).  Specific match results were as follows:

The last time Piedmont has won a dual team State championship was 25 years ago in 1987.  The 2012 wrestling team will leave a legacy rarely accomplished and this is finishing as undefeated State champions!  According to Coach Jamie Belk, "We set a mentality in the practice room that we would attack Croatan and not let up until we finished the job this year."  Piedmont fans who would like to watch video of the State Championship matches can go to

The State Championship was especially rewarding for the seniors on the team who have worked so hard to reach this goal.  Seniors Matt Maske and Kirby Haigler have both been in the Piedmont wrestling program for seven years.  According to Matt Maske, "Being on this wrestling team for four years and enduring all the hard work to get this result really means a lot!"  In addition, Kirby Haigler stated, "It feels good to finally beat Croatan after losing to them for the past two years.  It feels good to win the State Championship not only for us, but for the past wrestlers who have meant so much to us and for the future wrestlers who will carry on the wrestling tradition at Piedmont."

The Panthers also had two individual State champions who won their weight class division in Greensboro on Saturday, February 25.  Congratulations to Dylan Nelson, 170 lbs, and Parker VonEgidy, 182 lbs. who are now State Champion wrestlers for 2012!
