Second Grade Researches United Kingdom
New Salem Second graders have been focusing on going global this year as part of a school-wide effort to integrate global topics and activities into our everyday curriculum. This year, New Salem second grade students have had an opportunity to participate in the VIF Global Gateway program where a designated grade level at the school adopts a specific country of study under the leadership of an international teacher. Ms. Emma White is our 2nd Grade VIF teacher. Through our daily lessons, students are learning facts about the United Kingdom, Ms. White’s home country.
Students recently completed a unit of study on writing and reading nonfiction text. Students worked in cooperative pairs to research facts about the United Kingdom using kid friendly websites and texts. This project provided students with exposure to using research methods to find information to include in their writing. As a result, students compiled their research information and wrote their own “All About Book†on a topic related to the United Kingdom. Research topics included: Food in the United Kingdom, Transportation, Seasons, and the Royal Family. Through this project, students were able to make connections to math, reading, writing, social studies and science. Students had a great time learning how to research and worked very hard on finding information while applying concepts that were taught during Writer’s Workshop.
