First Book-Charlotte Celebration

Mr. Harvey and Ms. Slagle greet guests as they enter the auditorium prior to the celebration.

Benton Heights held a First Book Celebration on April 30, 2010, for students in Kindergarten through grade two. The theme of the Celebration was "Inspire. Empower. Ignite."

Ms. Slagle, a second grade teacher at BHESA, recently received a grant from First Book-Charlotte. This grant will be used to provide every student in grades K-2 six leveled books which will be taken home to enrich literacy. The mission of First Book-Charlotte is to give all students the opportunity to read their own books at home.

Dignataries from around Union County as well as the First Book-Charlotte Co-founder, Colleen Ludington, and PBS Kids Respresentative, Beverly Dorn Steele,  were in attendance and spoke to the audience of students, staff, and parents.

Following the assembly, the invited guests went to individual classrooms to read books to students and to hear students read to them. The excitement of the students was incredible when they finally got hands on their very own books! Thank you, Ms. Slagle, & First Book-Charlotte.
