Walker Wins State Wrestling Championship

Cody Walker, junior, became the first male state champion at Cuthbertson High School with his wrestling state championship in February.

Cody Walker, junior, won the 2A 120 lb. State Wrestling Championship February 23-25 held in the Greensboro Coliseum. In doing so, he became Cuthbertson High School’s first-ever male state champion.

Walker compiled a record of 50-3 this season. Along the way he won several tournaments: The Bobby Abernathy Memorial at Piedmont, the Porter Ridge Invitational, the Rocky River Conference and the 2A Midwest Regional. He attained his 100th win at the Sun Valley Dual Meet Tournament. The win at states qualified him for the National High School Wrestling Championship in Virginia Beach where he will compete March 28-30.

“This is something that I have wanted since I started wrestling. After last year I knew that I had to work that much harder to win it, but I knew all along I could do it,” said Walker. Last year he finished third at states.

Coach Dan Hartman said, “Cody did exactly what he had to do in order to win. He beat some very good state-ranked kids along the way and was in control of every match. He is truly a student of the sport and has excelled in every aspect. I am very proud of what he has been able to accomplish and can’t wait for next year!”

Walker said, “My proudest moment has to be winning the 2A 120 lb. State Championship. It was the greatest feeling in the world.”
