Antioch Cares for Another School
For the month of February our school, along with the Weddington Cluster, raised money for the Bocas School Project. The Bocas School Project is part of the New Global Citizen program. The Bocas School Project supports four schools, totaling 429 students, in the Bocas section of Panama. The project helps fund teacher salaries, food and uniforms for the schools. Many of the students in this area are from the Ngobe-Bugle tribe, and most schools lack sanitation facilities, running water, and electricity. Often students are malnourished and do not attend school past the fourth grade.
Our school raised $1195 for the cluster donation, and participated in a Chick Fil-A night event that raised over $1000 for the project. Our Giving Gators club, along with Lisa Schilling and Susan Campbell, spearheaded our campaign drive. Lisa is a fourth grade AIG teacher at our school and Susan is our school counselor. The Giving Gators is one of our after school clubs, and helps with service projects, recycyling, and community awareness. Lisa Schilling said that the "Giving Gators held announcements, made posters, informed classmates, and kept track of amounts to disply on a chart for the school to use and see." Emily, a Giving Gator, said that "going on the announcements was so much fun and promoted the project!" Mary Jane, another Giving Gator, was so happy because they raised so much money. They are seen in the adjoining picture.
