WHS FFA Buys a Water Buffalo
The Weddington FFA Chapter took on a global community service project last January through Heifer International. The National FFA Organization is a leadership organization based around agricultural interests. Heifer International is a nonprofit organization devoted to stopping poverty throughout the world. The goal of this project is to use agriculture to improve a village’s economic standing by increasing its self-reliance. Heifer’s “Pass on the Gift†is an initiative to finance an animal and send it to an impoverished village. From there, the animal is bred, and the offspring is sent to a neighboring village. This provides a continual gift. The Weddington FFA saw this program as a great way to give back and support the global community. FFA chose a water buffalo from the large catalog. They chose a water buffalo because of its hardiness and multiple uses. Water buffalos can provide milk, labor, and income for a village. The FFA had to raise $250.00 in order to purchase the water buffalo. FFA members received a card to sign and hang up in the school’s hallway showing that they “bought the buffalo!†when they donated. The FFA also kept a graph to track their fundraising progress. The FFA was able to raise the total amount for the water buffalo by the end of February.
