Maxie Johnson Jr. a seventh-grade math teacher at East Union Middle School, was named the 2012-2013 Union County Public Schools Teacher of the Year during Thursday's (April 27, 2012) Teacher of the Year Banquet.

“I just happened to be in his classroom this week, and I want to tell you, this man can really teach,” said UCPS Superintendent Dr. Ed Davis. “I walked out of his classroom and asked his principal, ‘Does he always teach like this? Is he always this engaged with his kids, this energetic? He must be worn out at the end of the day.’ Mr. Johnson is a wonderful representation of the teaching profession.”

East Union Middle School Principal Dr. Kenneth Hoover was not surprised to hear his teacher’s name called. “He’s well deserved of this honor,” Hoover said. “Mr. Johnson is the type of teacher who wants the neediest kids in his classroom. He goes above and beyond. He’s always willing to mentor students, those in his grade level and in other grade levels. He’s also our basketball coach. He’s always willing to do what the school and the students need. We’re very proud of him.”

Johnson, however, said he was surprised when he heard his name called. “I thought I was capable of winning, but there are so many wonderful candidates here, that hearing my name called was quite a shock. I sat there for a moment not really sure. ‘Did they say my name?’ But then everyone at the table let me know by screaming and yelling.”

He said he was humbled and honored to have been chosen, and spoke of how much he has enjoyed teaching at East Union Middle. “It’s been great. It’s been an awesome ride. I enjoy it. I will do the best that I can to represent this wonderful county of teachers and our district. All of you are phenomenal.”

During the program, the 2011 UCPS Teacher of the Year, Maya Schultz, a science teacher at Cuthbertson High School, reflected on the past year. She said she had been celebrated and supported by the entire community. She talked about the high quality of teachers in Union County and the difficult economic times. “Times are hard,” she said. “But tough times don’t last, tough people do.”

For winning the countywide Teacher of the Year title, Johnson received $500 and a Teacher of the Year ring. The Union County Education Foundation also awarded Johnson a laptop computer.

Davis commended all the school-level winners at the banquet. “There’s just outstanding teaching going on through out this school system,” he said. “I’m amazed every year. The caliber of teaching gets better and better each year. We do well every year because of you. All of you tonight are winners.”
