Mrs. Pendleton's class are British historians!
During their last reading and writing units, Mrs. Pendleton’s class independently researched different time periods throughout British History. The students formed into 5 groups and researched 5 different time periods: The Romans (AD43-400), The Vikings (800-1066), The Tudors (1485-1603), The Victorians (1837-1901) and Britain during WW2 (1939-1945).
The students used various methods for their research. They visited the media center and took out non-fiction books or read through Encyclopedias. They also used the laptops in class to visit different websites to gather information. The students always cited the source of their information in the correct way, as they had been shown by Mrs. Williams.
After gathering all of their research each student drafted, edited and published a non-fiction report on their chosen time period. In addition to their individual reports, the students put together and rehearsed a group presentation on their topic. There were 2 powerpoint presentations by The Victorians and The Romans, there was a very impressive Tudor Family Tree, an oral report on WW2 and a very amusing skit on the Vikings.
The students finally presented their group projects to their English guests Mr. and Mrs. Latimer (Mrs. Pendleton’s parents) who had flown in from England especially for the presentations. “I was very impressed by how much the children knew about English history and with how well they presented the information”, commented Mr. Latimer, after seeing all of the presentations.
