Latin Club Spreads Fun
During February, the PRHS Latin Club led a service project at Porter Ridge High School to collected toys to benefit Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte. The Latin Club collected crayons and coloring books, puzzle books, stuffed animals, bubbles, play dough, and small games such as Rubik’s cubes from February 20 to March 2, 2012. They collected more than thirteen boxes of donations for these children.
Club members staffed a collection booth during all lunch periods for these two weeks as well. The club also turned to teachers, who put donation boxes in their classrooms. Some teachers even gave extra credit to students who brought toys for the cause. They also asked Mrs. Baucom‘s art class to make encouraging posters for the children‘s rooms, which we delivered with the toys.
On Tuesday, April 3, four club members, which were, Megan Woody, Bri Paglia, Emily Yancey, Randi Purvis, and the club’s sponsor and Latin teacher, Juliet Kasler, delivered the toys and participated in a spring carnival for the children. During the carnival, they played corn hole, blew bubbles, and played many other things with the children. The toys that weren’t used during the carnival were later used to calm and comfort other children in the hospital.
It was a very successful fundraiser, with over thirteen boxes of collected toys. The hospital officials and children were very happy and very appreciative of what Porter Ridge High School did for them.
