Porter Ridge Elementary Supports Relay for Life!

Third graders enjoy the music and cheers on their walk around the building during our school’s mini Relay for Life.

The Relay for Life event held Friday night, May 4 at Sun Valley High School was a culminating event for Porter Ridge Elementary. It all began mid-year when our school held its first annual Charity Drive to support the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, and Loaves & Fishes.

The funds raised were split between these three organizations. Our school's Healthy Living Committee set a goal of $1500.00 for the American Cancer Society. The Charity Drive donations, along with on-line donations and registration fees for Relay for Life participation, surpassed our goal and we raised a total of $1927.27!
Students got involved in other ways, too. On the morning of the county-wide Relay event, Porter Ridge Elementary conducted their own mini walk. Some classes made posters or banners; others donned Hawaiian garb (the theme for our school's adult Relay team). All classes walked around the school campus, cheered on by administrators, specialty area teachers, and our school's pre-K class. Everyone enjoyed the lively music and festive atmosphere, knowing they were walking for a
good cause.

Our thanks go to third grade teacher, Mrs. Amanda Furr, who coordinated this year's Relay events for Porter Ridge Elementary. Her team appreciates her leadership in attending meetings, bringing back information, assisting with registrations, taking materials to the Relay site, and staying 'til the wee hours of the morning to tear down. Mrs. Furr says she was very excited to see the number of student and staff who supported this year's efforts.
