MRMS takes top spot in 24 competition

As a new 24 card is dealt students strive to be the first with a mathematical answer.

Math wizardry was in the cards at Marvin Ridge Middle School during the annual district 24 competition on April 5, 2012. The 24 Game is a math game in which competitors are given a set of four numbers and must use their skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to total 24. There are no calculators, pens or pads of paper allowed. Points are awarded for the number of equations completed and the difficulty level and tallied at the end of each round. The highest scoring students move on to the next round narrowing down the field until a sole winner is announced.

Each Union County Middle School brought a team to the competition. Thirteen students from Marvin Ridge participated. These students practiced at least once a week since November with their coaches; Ms. Lisa Hopkins, Ms. Dianne Hooker and Ms. Carmen Harpham. Their hard work paid off with several bronze, silver and gold medal wins in addition to the overall first place trophy which went to 6th grade student Arushi Biswas.

Arushi finished the final round with the highest overall point total earning her the top spot in the competition and the championship trophy. “The final rounds included a lot of decimals and fractions which are my strong point,” said Arushi. The team all agreed that Ms. Harpham and the other coaches helped a lot but Arushi was sure to note that it only took her a few weeks of practice before she was able to beat even the coaches in practice matches.

Using games to teach is a fun and fantastic way to get kids interested in all subject areas. Ms. Artez Watts, the county math curriculum coordinator, was one of the first to recognize the potential of 24 as a teaching tool. With the help of all the middle school coaches she has shown that math can be enjoyable social event and the excitement of the annual 24 competition is the proof.

Congratulations to the following students who made up the MRMS 24 team:

Arushi Biswas, Matthew Blizzard, Ava Erfani, Rhea Gopali, Aathmika Krishna, Sneha Mishra, Chidy Odita-Honnah, Papa Odita-Honnah, Neil Palkar, Jainith Patel, Nicole Patton, Jonathan Swierski, and Arpad Voros.
