Angel Sanchez Wins State Poster Contest
EUMS student, Angel Sanchez, was the state winner in 6th grade for the Fight the Bite Poster Contest. The contest is conducted nationally in collaboration with the CDC and the DEET Education Program, Washington, DC. This contest is designed to help children learn more about insects and ticks that spread disease via their bites and how to avoid bites. The contest is now in its fourth year. National winners (one each from 5th and 6th grades) receive $1000 in a savings bond and a trip to the CDC with their family for an awards ceremony. Each state also has winners, one each from 5th and 6th grades. These students win a $50 savings bond and a certificate. Their posters are posted on the Fight the Bite Poster Contest website and can be used by public health officials across the state and country in health education materials.
The State of North Carolina supports this effort enthusiastically and last year created an event to honor the state winners. Children and their parents were invited to Raleigh for a presentation. They were treated to lunch at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, received a gift certificate to the museum store and spent the afternoon enjoying the museum.
